About Private Onsen in Japan
Two words you need to know: kashikiri buro (貸切風呂). That's a shared bath you reserve for exclusive use — you lock the door, soak for 40 to 90 minutes, and leave. The bath gets cleaned between guests. This is the private onsen option most travelers actually book, and it's the one that solves the tattoo problem without anyone needing to know you have tattoos. You'll find kashikiri at day-use facilities starting around 1,500 yen and at traditional ryokan where overnight guests sometimes get sessions included free.
In-room onsen are the other option: a private bath built into your guest room, no reservation needed, no time limit. You pay through the room rate rather than per session. The trade-off is straightforward — kashikiri gives you a better bath for less money, in-room gives you midnight soaks and zero scheduling.
If you want the private bath experience without an overnight stay, know that day-use kashikiri can be hard to find in many locations. Most ryokan reserve their private baths for overnight guests, and the standalone day-use facilities that offer them are scattered and rarely advertised in English. That's what the destination pages below focus on — from riverside kashikiri in Hakone to snow-country ryokan in Hokkaido, urban day-use facilities in Osaka, and converted machiya townhouses in Kyoto. Each page tells you the bath type, what it costs, and whether you can walk in for a day session or need an overnight stay.
