About Private Onsen in Japan
I started Tattoo Friendly Onsen after a family trip to Japan fell apart over a tattoo. My brother had hidden a large one for years; when it surfaced, we cancelled every onsen booking we'd made. I spent the next few years working out which hot springs actually welcome tattooed guests, and a private bath kept coming up as the most reliable answer: you reserve it, lock the door, and the water is yours, tattoos and all. The 60-plus private-bath stays on this page are the ones we've researched.
What is a private onsen, and which kind should you book?
"Private onsen" covers a few different baths, and knowing which one you're booking saves an awkward surprise at check-in. A kashikiri (貸切, sometimes listed as a family bath, 家族風呂) is a shared bath you reserve for private use: book a slot, and for that hour the water is all yours, with staff cleaning it between guests. An in-room onsen is exactly what it sounds like, a bath in your own hotel or ryokan room, no reservation and no clock.
A kashikiri usually buys you a bigger, better bath for less; an in-room bath buys you a midnight soak and nothing to schedule. Either way, nobody else shares the water, so tattoos and shyness about bathing with strangers stop being a problem.
"Private bath" doesn't automatically mean tattoos are fine, though. Plenty of properties relax once the door is locked, but a few restrict tattoos even in their private baths. It's exactly the kind of thing worth double-checking before you book.
What does a private onsen in Japan cost?
It depends on the bath and the stay. Across the properties we've researched, a reservable kashikiri session runs from about 1,100 to 4,400 yen, usually for 40 to 50 minutes. Many ryokan skip the fee and include a private bath free for overnight guests, and in-room baths are folded into the room rate rather than charged by the session. Day-use facilities sit at the lower end; the priciest are the design-led private baths at higher-end ryokan.
Can you visit a private onsen without staying overnight?
Usually not. Most private baths in Japan come with an overnight stay, and day-use kashikiri is genuinely hard to find, especially in the big cities. Beppu is the clear exception: there the private baths are day-use, so you reserve one and walk in. If you only have daytime hours elsewhere, plan around the few stays that allow it, or pick a fully tattoo-friendly public bath instead.
Prefer a public bath over a private one?
Some onsen welcome tattoos openly in their communal baths, with no cover-up and no booking needed. You can filter for those, and browse every verified listing, in our onsen directory. A private bath is the lowest-stress place to start; an openly tattoo-friendly public bath is the one to work up to.
To plan by region, the guides below go deep on each: riverside kashikiri in Hakone, snow-country ryokan in Hokkaido, day-use baths in Osaka, and converted machiya in Kyoto. Each tells you the bath type, the real cost, and whether you can walk in for the day or need to stay the night.
