Overview of Dōgo Onsen Annex Asuka no Yu
The light shifts first. You're soaking in the main bath when the Tobe porcelain murals on the walls come alive — projection mapping rolls across the ceramic tiles, turning Mt. Ishizuchi or the Seto Inland Sea into a slow-moving panorama of color and steam. It happens every half hour, and it catches everyone off guard the first time.
Dōgo Onsen Annex Asuka no Yu opened in 2017 as the modern counterpart to Japan's oldest hot spring. The architecture borrows from the Asuka period — latticed windows, tiled roofs, a tower topped with a white heron — but inside, the facility is clean-lined and contemporary. The water is the same alkaline source that feeds the iconic Honkan next door, piped in undiluted. An indoor bath, a semi-outdoor rotenburo, and bookable private baths upstairs that recreate the imperial bathing rooms. Day-use only, no overnight.
If you're visiting Matsuyama and want your one Dōgo Onsen soak in a place where tattooed guests bathe openly alongside everyone else, Asuka no Yu is the easier, less-crowded choice — and the projection mapping gives it a moment the Honkan can't match.
Tattoo Rules & Guidelines

Why Bathe Here? Benefits and History
- Tattoos Accepted, No Covers Needed: Recent first-person reviews in both Japanese and English confirm tattooed guests use all bathing areas without restriction — staff don't bat an eye.
- Projection Mapping in the Bath: Tobe porcelain murals lining the walls come alive with projected animations every 30 minutes — a visual experience no other public bath in the region offers.
- Same Source Water as Honkan: Fed by the same undiluted alkaline spring that has drawn bathers to Dōgo for centuries, in a modern facility with amenities the 1894 Honkan doesn't have.
- Bookable Private Baths: Two reservable special baths on the second floor replicate the imperial Yūshinden — complete with a tatami rest room, tea, sweets, and a traditional yucho bathing robe.

Bathing Experience & Onsen Etiquette
The water is soft and nearly odorless — a simple alkaline spring that leaves your skin noticeably smoother when you towel off. The main indoor bath seats about ten, walled on three sides by Tobe porcelain panels depicting Ehime landscapes. On the hour and half-hour, those murals light up with projected animation, and the room goes quiet while everyone watches. The semi-outdoor rotenburo is smaller — three or four bathers at a time — with hinoki cypress panels and enough open air to feel the temperature contrast on your shoulders. Wash stations are semi-partitioned, a small upgrade in privacy that bathers consistently notice. Upstairs, the special private baths are a different experience entirely: wood-walled rooms with their own soaking tubs, designed after the imperial bathing chambers, booked by the 90-minute slot.
