Outdoor bath at Konohananoyu with Mt. Fuji view in shin-hanga art style

Overview of Konohananoyu

Mt. Fuji fills the frame. Not a glimpse through trees or a distant silhouette โ€” the full mountain, ridgeline to snowcap, rising directly ahead while you stand shoulder-deep in mineral water. Konohananoyu's standing bath drops to 130 centimeters and faces the summit head-on, close enough that on clear mornings the snow line sharpens while steam curls off the surface around you.

This is a day-use facility inside the Gotemba Premium Outlets complex, which sounds like a contradiction until you step past the old-townhouse entrance and into the bathing hall. The spring is self-sourced, yellowish and clear, with a slippery mineral feel that leaves skin noticeably smoother. Outdoors, a wide panoramic bath and the standing bath face Fuji. Indoors, a carbonated bath and jet baths fill the gap between sauna rounds. Since April 2025, tattoo restrictions have been formally lifted โ€” tattooed bathers use all areas, communal and private, without covers or questions. At 90 minutes by direct bus from Shinjuku, it is one of the closest open-air onsen day trips from Tokyo with unobstructed Mt. Fuji views โ€” and one where tattoos are no barrier at all.

Why Bathe Here? Benefits and History

  • Mt. Fuji from the Bath: The outdoor panoramic bath and standing bath face the mountain head-on โ€” on clear days, the view runs from ridgeline to summit with nothing in the way.
  • All Areas Open to Tattooed Guests: Every bath โ€” communal, outdoor, and private โ€” is open without covers or questions. Recent reviews from 2025โ€“2026 confirm tattooed bathers soaking openly in all areas.
  • 19 Private Outdoor Baths: The Kaden (่Šฑไผ) pavilion offers hinoki, stone, jar, and rock-style private tubs โ€” bookable by the hour, each with its own rest space.
  • Sauna with Lรถyly Service: A proper sauna program runs four sessions daily with aromatic steam, backed by a cold plunge that regulars describe as sharp and satisfying.

Bathing Experience & Onsen Etiquette

The first thing you notice is the water โ€” faintly gold, slippery between your fingers, with a mineral warmth that builds slowly and a salty tingle that stays on your skin after you towel off. Outside, the wide panoramic bath sits low and open with Osawa lava rock edging, and the standing bath beside it lets you soak shoulder-deep while Mt. Fuji dominates the skyline. At dusk, the mountain turns orange and the steam catches the last light. Inside, a carbonated bath fizzes against your skin, and the sauna runs hot enough to earn the cold plunge next door โ€” a 16-degree drop that regulars treat as the real draw. The rest area beyond the baths stretches wide, with tatami zones and quiet corners for cooling down between rounds.
