Overview of Gekkoen Yugetsusanso
The sound of the Takigawa River reaches you before the building does. Past the entrance, a wooden bridge β Gekko Bridge β arcs over the water toward a three-story sukiya-style structure that has stood here for over fifty years, its timber darkened by decades of steam and mountain air. Incense drifts through the hallways. Below the windows, the river runs clear over stone.
Gekkoen Yugetsusanso is a traditional ryokan at the base of Mount Ochiba in Arima Onsen, built along the riverbank so that its outdoor baths sit directly above the water. The draw is the self-sourced kinsen β Arima's famous gold spring, which surfaces clear and turns rust-brown as it meets the air. Guests move between the main building's baths, the riverside rotenburo, and the sister property Korokan's larger bathhouse next door, all included with a stay. Summer brings fireflies along the river. Autumn turns the mountainside above the baths red and gold.
For tattooed travelers, the path here is the private baths β three bookable options at the sister property and select rooms with their own open-air tubs. If you want a riverside Arima ryokan where you can soak in kinsen without navigating communal bath restrictions, this is a strong option.
Tattoo Rules & Guidelines
Private Bathing Allowed: Gekkoen Yugetsusanso offers two private open-air onsen baths and in-room baths in select room types, where tattooed guests can bathe in privacy. Cover-up stickers are also an option for guests with small tattoos who wish to use the communal baths. Tattoos are otherwise not permitted in the shared bathing areas. This Arima Onsen ryokan provides multiple options for tattooed guests to enjoy the therapeutic waters.
Why Bathe Here? Benefits and History
- Private Onsen for Tattooed Guests: Three bookable private baths at the sister property Korokan and select rooms with in-room open-air tubs β tattooed guests can bathe in kinsen in privacy.
- Riverside Rotenburo with Self-Sourced Kinsen: The outdoor bath draws from the ryokan's own gold spring source, sitting directly above the Takigawa River with the sound of running water as the only backdrop.
- Two Properties, One Stay: Overnight guests access both Yugetsusanso and the sister property Korokan's larger bathhouse β different bath styles, more variety without leaving the grounds.
- Arima's Seasonal Face: Fireflies along the river in summer, red maples overhead in autumn, and cherry blossoms in spring β the setting shifts with each visit.

Bathing Experience & Onsen Etiquette
Steam rises off brown-gold water while the river rushes below. The main building's rotenburo sits close enough to the Takigawa that you hear every ripple, and the kinsen β clear when it leaves the ground, rust-colored by the time it fills the tub β feels dense and warm against your skin. Indoor baths in the main building run quieter: stone-lined soaking pools in a traditional layout.
Walk across to the sister property Korokan for a larger bathhouse with both kinsen and ginsen pools, plus a sauna. The contrast between the two springs is worth experiencing β the brown gold water heavy and warming, the clear ginsen lighter on the skin. Private baths at Korokan include a hinoki cypress tub, a cave-style bath, and a wine bath, all bookable for a reserved session.
