Overview of Tenzan Onsen
The forest thickens on the walk in, and then you hear the river. The Sukumo runs below the building, out of sight but never out of earshot β a low, steady sound that sets the pace for everything that follows. Tenzan sits in the Tonosawa valley above that river, all dark wood and stone, surrounded by cedar dense enough that the air cools the moment you step inside the grounds.
This is a toji facility β hot spring therapy, not entertainment. The layout is built for slow, deliberate bathing: outdoor pools spread across a wooded hillside, each fed by a different source spring at a different temperature, with tatami rest areas and a well-regarded cafΓ© between rounds. Two hours is the minimum here. Most regulars stretch past three. The quiet is deliberate β group sizes are restricted, quiet bathing is expected, and the rhythm of the place rewards patience.
If you're choosing one day-use onsen in the Hakone area where tattooed guests soak openly in the communal baths and the water itself justifies the trip, Tenzan is the answer repeat visitors give.

Why Bathe Here? Benefits and History
- Tattoos Accepted in All Baths: Solo visitors and groups with one tattooed member bathe openly in every pool β indoor, outdoor, sauna β without covers or patches.
- Source-Flowing Springs, No Dilution: Every pool is fed directly from self-sourced springs with no added water and no chlorine β silver-ion sterilized, 100% source-flowing.
- Built for Toji, Not Tourism: Group sizes are capped, quiet bathing is expected, and the facility is designed around extended therapeutic soaking β a place that takes its water seriously.
- Forest Setting Above the Gorge: Outdoor pools sit under cedar canopy on a hillside above the Sukumo river, with autumn color overhead and river sound below year-round.

Bathing Experience & Onsen Etiquette
Heat hits you at different intensities depending on which pool you step into β the hottest makes you draw breath, the coolest barely registers as warm. The water across all of them is alkaline and soft, clear with no mineral smell, and it leaves your skin feeling different when you towel off β smoother, like something was stripped away.
The outdoor pools line a hillside under cedar canopy with the Sukumo audible below. Both sides feature a distinctive steam bath: the men's kiln bath is a low, cave-like chamber filled with hot spring vapor, while the women's side has a mist-filled cave carved from stone. The cold plunge between rounds sharpens everything. In autumn, the canopy above the pools turns red before the rest of the valley catches up. Evening visitors get a different Tenzan β stars through the cedar gaps and a quiet the daytime crowds don't allow.
