Overview of Zaborin Ryokan
Steam curls off stone into birch forest, and the only sound is snowmelt dripping from the eaves. Your villa sits alone in twelve acres of Hanazono woodland β no corridors, no neighbors, just a covered walkway threading through trees to your own indoor and outdoor onsen fed by a volcanic source nearly a kilometer underground.
Zaborin is fifteen independent villas scattered through a private forest at the edge of Niseko. Each one pairs a hinoki cypress indoor bath with a carved-stone or hinoki rotenburo, both running gensen kakenagashi β unheated, unrecycled spring water that holds its temperature naturally. There are no communal baths here at all. The property is built around the idea that your soak belongs to you, your dining room belongs to you, and your view of Mount Yotei or the Annupuri range belongs to you.
If you want a Hokkaido onsen experience where every villa includes its own indoor and outdoor onsen and no communal baths exist on the property, Zaborin is the clearest answer in the region. Book winter for snow-draped birch from the rotenburo. Book summer for open windows and forest air.
Tattoo Rules & Guidelines
Private Bathing Allowed: All 15 villas at Zaborin Ryokan include private indoor and outdoor onsen baths with gensen kakenagashi (direct source, unrecycled hot spring water). With no communal bathing facilities on the property, tattooed guests can enjoy the full onsen experience in complete privacy. This is one of the most premium private onsen experiences in Hokkaido.
Why Bathe Here? Benefits and History
- Total Privacy, No Communal Baths: Every villa has its own indoor and outdoor onsen β there are no shared bathing facilities on the property.
- Gensen Kakenagashi Spring Water: The volcanic source runs unheated and unrecycled directly into each bath β one of the higher-quality spring feeds in Hokkaido, with water soft enough that guests describe it as noticeably soothing on skin.
- Kita Kaiseki Dining: Northern Hokkaido interpretation of kaiseki using local seafood, dairy, and produce β served in your own private dining room, not a shared restaurant.
- Niseko Without the Crowds: Ten minutes from Hanazono ski slopes but set deep enough in forest that the resort atmosphere disappears entirely β repeat visitors describe it as the quiet counterpoint to Niseko's busier accommodations.

Bathing Experience & Onsen Etiquette
The water comes up warm and stays warm β no reheating, no recycling, just a continuous feed from the volcanic source below. In the indoor bath, hinoki cypress frames floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the forest. Step through the glass and the outdoor rotenburo sits on a stone deck where birch trees close in overhead. In winter, snow builds on the branches above you while the water holds steady. In summer, the forest canopy filters light and the air carries the smell of wet wood and earth. The spring itself is soft and faintly alkaline β clear, with no strong mineral odor, the kind of water that leaves your skin noticeably different when you towel off. Most guests settle into the outdoor bath at dusk, when the property lights the surrounding trees and the forest shifts from green to gold.
