Overview of Shibaseki Onsen

Steam rises through bamboo slats beneath your feet. The mushi-yu at Shibaseki sits you on a heated bamboo floor with spring water flowing underneath at 80 degrees — dense steam fills the room, and the only sound is water echoing off stone. Step outside to the rotenburo and the contrast hits immediately: cool mountain air, open sky, a river running somewhere below you.

Shibaseki is a municipal onsen on the quiet outskirts of Beppu, well away from the tourist-facing jigoku hells. The building was renovated in 1997 but keeps the feel of a neighborhood bathhouse — locals arrive early morning, soak, and linger in the tatami rest room afterward like they're at a relative's house. Two indoor baths at different temperatures, an outdoor pool open to the mountains, the steam room, and a reservable family bath — all fed by free-flowing spring water that isn't recirculated.

If you want to experience how Beppu residents actually use their hot springs — unhurried, daily, routine — Shibaseki is the real thing. Tattooed guests bathe openly in all areas.

Tattoo Rules & Guidelines

Why Bathe Here? Benefits and History

  • The Steam Bath: Shibaseki's mushi-yu sits you on a bamboo floor with 80°C spring water flowing beneath — a full-body steam experience distinct from any standard sauna.
  • Tattoos Accepted Across All Areas: Confirmed tattoo-friendly by Oita Prefecture Tourism — tattooed guests bathe openly in the communal baths, rotenburo, and family bath.
  • Imperial Bathing History: Emperors visited in 895 and 1044 for therapeutic soaking — one of Beppu's oldest recorded hot spring sites, designated as a National Health Resort.
  • Family Bath for Privacy: A reservable kashikiri bath accommodates up to four guests — large enough to open the window for an outdoor bath feeling.

Bathing Experience & Onsen Etiquette

Heat hits your feet first. The mushi-yu's bamboo floor radiates warmth from the spring water flowing beneath it, and within seconds the steam thickens until you can barely see the walls. The sound of water echoing in the small chamber is the whole experience — no conversation, no view, just heat and the noise of the spring.

Cool down in the rotenburo afterward. The outdoor bath sits open to the sky with mountain forest on all sides and no roof overhead — birdsong and river sound replace the echo of the steam room. Inside, two pools offer different temperatures: one hot enough to make you draw breath, one around 41 degrees where you can settle in and stay. The water is soft, weakly alkaline, and flows directly from the source without recirculation.
