Overview of Takegawara Onsen
The building stops you first. A sweeping karahafu gable roof, dark wood beams, high ceilings β Takegawara looks like it belongs in another century because it does. Built in 1879 and designated a national Tangible Cultural Property, this is Beppu's oldest public bathhouse, and it still runs the way it always has: hot water, stone tubs, and a sand bath where attendants bury you in onsen-heated sand while you lie there in a yukata wondering why you waited so long to try this.
Takegawara is a municipal sento in the truest sense. Locals file in early morning, tourists discover it midday, and everyone shares the same dome-shaped tubs of source-flowing water that runs hotter than most visitors expect. The sand bath is the draw β a physical experience closer to massage than soaking, and Beppu is one of the few places in Japan where you can do it indoors year-round.
If you're in Beppu and want one experience that captures the city's public bathing culture β no frills, tattooed guests bathing openly alongside regulars, a building worth photographing from the street β this is the one locals point you to.

Why Bathe Here? Benefits and History
- Sand Bath Indoors, Year-Round: One of Japan's few indoor sand baths β attendants heap onsen-heated sand over your body while you lie in a yukata, a sweating-out experience you can't replicate in a regular bath.
- Tattoos Accepted Across All Facilities: As a municipal public bathhouse, guests with tattoos bathe in both the communal baths and sand bath without covers or questions.
- Meiji-Era Architecture Still in Use: A nationally designated Tangible Cultural Property from 1879 with its original karahafu gable roof, high-ceilinged lobby, and retro fixtures β a working bathhouse, not a museum.
- Staff Navigate the Language Gap: The reception desk staff make an effort with English explanations of the sand bath process and bathing etiquette β visitors consistently note this as a highlight.

Bathing Experience & Onsen Etiquette
The water hits hard. Takegawara's source-flowing spring runs hotter than most public baths, and stepping into the dome-shaped stone tub takes a slow, deliberate entry. The men's and women's sides draw from different springs β one a salt-rich mineral spring, the other soft and alkaline β both clear and faintly mineral on the skin.
But the sand bath is what you came for. You change into a yukata, lie on a bed of dark sand warmed by the hot spring running beneath it, and the sand attendants heap it onto your body until only your head is free. Ten minutes. The weight presses down, the heat seeps in from below and above, and you sweat through the cotton. When they dig you out, your limbs feel heavy and loose in a way the regular bath alone doesn't produce. Rinse off next door and let the old building do the rest.
